Association for Communal Harmony in Asia (ACHA) Next Project WHAT? Dr. Abdul Hameed Nayyar, a prominent physicist and peace activist from Pakistan will deliver two public lectures in Portland, OR. The lectures have been sponsored by the Association for Communal Harmony in Asia, and have been made possible by assistance from the physics, history and international relations departments of Lewis & Clark College, and the Institute for Asian Studies of Portland State University. Nayyar is a prominent Pakistani physicist who recently retired from Quaid-i-Azam University , Islamabad , after teaching there for over 30 years. He was educated in Karachi , Islamabad and London , and held visiting academic positions in the USA , Canada and Italy . Currently he is a Visiting Research Scholar in the Program on Science and Global Security at Princeton University , a position he has held since 1998. At Princeton , he works on technical issues related to nuclear disarmament. During 2001-2002, Dr. Nayyar took leave from Quaid-i-Azam University to join Sustainable Development Policy Institute (SDPI), Islamabad , to work in the areas of education and renewable energy. At SDPI, he led a methodical study into the distortion of history, emphasis on militarism, creation of ill will against minorities, and creation of a young jihadist class in Pakistan . This study is available at www.sdpi.org under the title "The Subtle Subversion: The State of Curricula and Textbooks in Pakistan ." It was hotly debated in 2004, and is now being widely quoted. Fore many years, Dr. Nayyar has actively participated in the peace & nuclear disarmament movement. He is a founding member of the Hong Kong-based Asian Peace Alliance, and a member of the global council of Abolition Now, a US-based international anti-nuclear peace group.
