SOUTH ASIA CULTURAL RESOURCE CENTER (SACRC)

Following upon the deliberations its 1998 Leadership Conference, and a questionnaire survey of South Asians in Portland-Vancouver area in 1998-99, ACHA decided to initiate the development of a South Asian Cultural Resource Center in Portland-Vancouver area.

The objective of SACRC is to promote peace and harmony among the people of South Asia living in Portland metropolitan area by bringing them together in an all-inclusive environment of mutual respect, learning and understanding. Since its activities will be open to everyone regardless of national origin, it will also promote appreciation of diversity among non-South Asians.
It will accomplish these goals by capitalizing on the strengths of the local and regional South Asian community in terms of its diversity, professional and business skills, and its heritage. Also, it will develop and foster relationships with other organizations in the general Portland area community.

Without duplicating what is already available, SACRC will facilitate:

  1. Collection, updating, and dissemination of lists of resources and information about South Asian culture and heritage;
  2. Provision of instruction in South Asian arts, crafts, games, history, languages, and music;
  3. Location of translation and interpretation services in South Asian languages; and
  4. Development of services for South Asian children, senior citizens and  new immigrants in the region.
For this purpose, ACHA has been publishing Community Calendar since 1998 and a Directory of South Asian Resources since 2000. Also a listing of some of the community resources can be found on ACHA Website www.asiapeace.org
